Sometimes we focus so much on words that we forget communication begins long before speech 🌱 A child does not need to be verbal to be communicating. Looking at something with you, pointing, bringing you objects, making sounds, smiling, taking your hand somewhere, eye contact, facial expressions and even behaviour can all carry meaning. Often, children are already communicating their: ✨ wants ✨ needs ✨ interests ✨ emotions ✨ discomfort ✨ excitement …before they have the words to express them verbally. One of the most powerful things we can do is acknowledge and respond to these moments. You can gently add language by commenting: 🤍 “Oh, you want help.” Or signing “help me.” 🤍 “I can see the bubbles!” 🤍 “You’re showing me!” 🤍 “You found the car!” This helps children connect experiences, meaning and language together naturally. Communication is more than speech. It is connection first. 🌿 Mundy & Newell (2007) — joint attention and non-verbal communication are closely linked to later language outcomes. Iverson & Goldin-Meadow (2005) — gestures support and predict spoken language development. Wetherby & Prizant (2002) — communication includes gestures, facial expressions, sounds, body language, eye gaze and emotional expression, not only spoken words.
